What is Flap Barrier Turnstiles?

Flap barrier turnstiles are electronic optical turnstiles with glass panels (or flaps). These glass panels extend from a pair of optical turnstile cabinets. The panels meet in the middle of the two cabinets to form a pedestrian barrier. A flap barrier turnstile is an aesthetically pleasing security and access control solution.
Flap barrier turnstiles come in different shapes and sizes. Rectangular, square, and wedge-shaped flaps are common flap barrier shapes. These flap barriers can be waist high or full height, depending on the level of security necessary. Optical turnstile flaps can move by either swinging or retracting to open a lane.

Benefits of Flap Barrier Turnstiles

Advanced Sensor Technology

Equipped with infrared sensors, these gates can accurately detect the presence and movement of individuals, ensuring precise and reliable operation.

High-Speed Operation

The flap barriers open and close quickly, providing a balance between security and efficiency. This reduces wait times and prevents congestion, even during peak usage periods.

Durable Construction

Made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel and reinforced plastics, the gates are designed to withstand heavy use and harsh environmental conditions, ensuring longevity and minimal maintenance.

Seamless Integration

These gates are compatible with various access control systems, including RFID cards, biometric scanners, and QR code readers. This flexibility allows them to be tailored to specific security requirements.

Aesthetic Design

Flap barrier gates have a sleek, modern design that complements contemporary architectural styles. They not only function well but also enhance the visual appeal of the facility.

Safety Features

In addition to emergency release mechanisms, the gates include features such as anti-pinch sensors to prevent injury and ensure user safety. Audible and visual alarms alert users and security personnel to any issues.

Type of Flap Barrier Turnstiles

Waist-high Turnstiles Gate
This is the most usual turnstile gate you’ll see. Waist-high turnstiles are stationary devices with three spinning arms and a center post that are about 40 inches high which is used to restrict entrance.

Full-height Turnstiles
Full-height turnstiles are substantially larger barriers that function similarly to spinning doors. These models can either allow entry and exit in either direction or both. Tandem types from several turnstile providers enable side-by-side entry and exit.
Full-height turnstile gates can be built from solid materials for optimum security or with an open appearance using vertical and horizontal bars. They are typically employed in locations with higher levels of security, including government buildings.

Optical Turnstiles
Optical turnstiles monitor traffic by detecting people who cross a beam of light using infrared sensors. Users can provide credentials to a turnstile gate with an attached card reader where entry is restricted.
The individual can pass through the turnstile door access control if the credentials are legitimate. Any attempt to enter without proper authorization will result in a visible or audible alarm to notify security.

Handicap Turnstiles
A handicap turnstile is often created for physically challenged individuals to make it easier for them to move about. The traditional flap barrier turnstile and tripod turnstile are not the same as the handicap turnstile. Physical barriers like wing plates and blocking rods are ineffective at restricting access. The handicap turnstile just has an inductive recognition function and no motion principle.

Portable Turnstile Gates
Although they are not permanently affixed to the ground and can be moved quickly and easily to locations where they are required for temporary access control, portable turnstile gates resemble waist-high turnstiles in appearance. These turnstile gate versions have sturdy base plates attached to the centre posts, and for simple movement, wheels are positioned beneath the base plates.

How Does The Flap Gate Turnstile Work?

When closed, the wedge-shaped wings come together at the top to form a barrier. The wings are visible and move in two directions. When opened, the wings entirely retract, allowing unrestricted access. The flap turnstile is equipped with infrared sensors to guarantee that only one person enters at a time with each authorized credential. If a pedestrian presents valid identification at the entrance, the flap gate barrier turnstile will open for free access and close on its own after access is complete or when the predetermined amount of time has passed, whichever comes first.

When used in combination with a facility access control system, the flap gate turnstile offers bi-directional access control. Its motorized barriers retract fully into the cabinet to allow a single passage in the requested direction when a user submits a valid credential, enabling the authorized users to move through quickly while preventing the entry of those without credentials. The physical barriers automatically retract into the housing in the event of a power outage to provide a clear path.

Which is Better, flap barrier turnstiles or Speed Turnstile?

Among all the turnstiles, flap barrier turnstiles and speed turnstile are very popular with customers. But because their appearance, width, speed, and other aspects are different, so when choosing the turnstiles, customers often have many questions for our technicians. So which one is better, flap barrier turnstiles mechanisms and good swing device? Let’s try to find the answer.

Speed
Flap barrier turnstiles has a small range of action and swing gate has a large range of action. Therefore, the protection area of flap barrier turnstiles is small and the action is fast, while the protection area of the speed turnstile is large and the action is slow.

Safety
Turnstile is prone to slap or pinch. The door page of the speed turnstile machine is coming face-to-face, with large contact area and customer’s pre-judgment, so the flapping force is not very strong; the door page of the flap barrier turnstiles is “sheared” on both sides of the human body, which is not easy to predict, and the contact area is small, the sheer force is large, and it is easy to hurt people. Therefore, the safety of the flap barrier turnstiles is not as high as that of the speed turnstile.

Mechanical Strength
The weakness of the strength of the turnstile lies on the door page. flap barrier turnstiles mechanisms have better strength and installation than speed turnstile.

Installation space
The standard width of speed turnstile is 600 mm (adjustable size), and the width of the flap barrier turnstiles is 260 mm.

Flap barrier turnstiles and speed turnstile work the same way. They are all driven by motors and rotated by photoelectric detection. Therefore, generally speaking, flap barrier turnstiles and speed turnstile are mainly aimed at the customer’s installation environment, appearance and width to choose their own. What is suitable is better.

Working Status And Function of the Flap Barrier Turnstiles After Power Failure

As one of the channel gate management equipment, the flap barrier turnstiles is mainly used for pedestrian channel management. It is now widely used in airports, subway stations, stations, docks, scenic spots, parks, student dormitories, unit pedestrian channels, etc. It can cooperate with smart cards to realize offline ticket management systems, face recognition, card swiping and other functions, forming unattended management of personnel entry and exit.

Working status after the flap barrier turnstiles is powered off
After the flap barrier turnstiles is powered off, the built-in battery will power the motor, and then the motor will rotate, and the baffle will retract into the chassis. After the built-in sensor inside senses it, the battery stops supplying power to the flap barrier turnstiles motor.

Function of flap barrier turnstiles
The flap barrier turnstiles is operated by a motor, and its opening and closing time can basically be controlled at about 0.5 seconds. When the flap barrier turnstiles is opened, it is in an obstacle-free state, and people can pass quickly, the fastest can reach 1.5-2 seconds/person, and the channel of the flap barrier turnstiles can pass small luggage and other items (drag method).

The flap barrier turnstiles is a mid-level product, which can support high-traffic places such as civil grade and rail transit. It has functions such as anti-climbing alarm, anti-following alarm, anti-pinch electronic eye, etc., and is a product with a relatively high safety level. Therefore, the price of the flap barrier turnstiles is higher than that of the three-roller gate and the sflap barrier turnstiles.

How to Maintain Your flap barrier turnstiles

Many people now use multi-use barriers to control entry points into their businesses. However, while these pedestrian access barriers are designed to be used over long periods of time and multiple times, they still require occasional maintenance.

Regular Cleaning
All equipment in a retail environment needs to be spotless and visually pleasing to customers. In order for your flap barrier turnstiles to look great, it is necessary to clean them regularly. All surfaces must be cleaned using a soft cloth and a high-quality stainless steel cleaner. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products and scouring pads as they can scratch the surface and damage the finish.

Inspect Surfaces
Regularly inspect surfaces for scratches, marks, and dents to determine if the equipment needs repair or replacement. Pedestrian-related access equipment is susceptible to collisions and knocks and needs to be monitored. Over time, brackets may become loose, guardrail panels may bend, and posts may begin to tilt. Customers may treat the door and exit areas roughly, and some equipment may be manually forced open. When parts are bent or misaligned, the equipment will not work as expected and will eventually fail to close or open properly.

Annual Lubrication
Lubricate all entrance equipment annually at a set time on the calendar. It is best to use a synthetic grease that is designed to lubricate any moving parts. This will help prevent the mechanism from sticking and ensure smooth operation for the coming year.

Perform Preventative Maintenance
Most full-height and waist-height guardrail entrance systems are sealed units that are designed to withstand the elements. However, the actual guardrails, drop arms, and guardrail panels are not, and they require some additional maintenance from time to time. If left unattended, you will gradually notice a buildup of dirt, making the guardrail look dirty and dingy. It is also common to find insect infestations where the barrier arms enter the enclosure. Both of these issues will affect the effectiveness of the barrier and will affect potential customers' perception of your business. Schedule cleaning every week or so, washing the barrier with a non-abrasive cleaning product and a soft cloth.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between a turnstile and a flap barrier?

A: Flap barriers have two flaps on either side that serve as physical barriers, limiting pedestrian access to a venue. Turnstile gates can be optical, which use infrared sensors to detect approaching people, and can operate with or without barriers. They can also be full height or waist high.

Q: What are flap barriers?

A: The Flap barrier mechanism has the feature that the wings can automatically open and close. Once the person swipes the card or shows his face in face reader the barrier gets opened, after the signal received by the access, the flap barrier automatically closes after a few seconds.

Q: How to install a flap barrier?

A: The installation of the flap barrier is divided into several parts: Step 1: Determining the installation location. Step 2: Pre-embedded lines. Step 3: Fixed flap barriers Step 4: Controller wiring connection. Step 5: Debugging the machine.

Q: How does a flap barrier work?

A: The Flap barrier mechanism has the feature that the wings can automatically open and close. Once the person swipes the card or shows his face in face reader the barrier gets opened, after the signal received by the access, the flap barrier automatically closes after a few seconds.

Q: How long does a gate barrier life span?

A: Commercial gates and barriers are a great solution for businesses looking to secure their premises. Manual and automatic security solutions can have lifespans of up to 20 years, but only when they are maintained correctly, this is why regular servicing is so critical.

Q: What Are Flap Barrier Turnstiles?

A: Flap Barrier Turnstiles, also known as flap gates or swing gates, are access control barriers that feature swinging or sliding flaps that open to allow passage and close to prevent unauthorized access. They are designed to be fast, secure, and user-friendly.

Q: How Do Flap Barrier Turnstiles Work?

A: Flap Barrier Turnstiles operate using an access control system. When a user presents a valid credential (such as a card, key fob, or biometric identifier), the system verifies the access rights. Once the access is granted, the flaps open, allowing the user to pass through. The flaps then close automatically after a short period or once the user has completely passed through.

Q: How Do Flap Barrier Turnstiles Prevent Tailgating?

A: Tailgating is prevented through the use of sensors that detect multiple people passing through at once. If tailgating is detected, the system can be programmed to sound an alarm, lock the flaps, or trigger a video recording.

Q: How Do Flap Barrier Turnstiles Compare to Other Types of Turnstiles?

A: Compared to other types like tripod turnstiles or speed gates, flap barriers often offer a more aesthetic design and better accessibility while providing comparable security features.

Q: What are Flap Barrier Turnstiles and How Do They Differ from Other Types?

A: Flap barrier turnstiles are access control devices that use swinging flaps to manage pedestrian flow. They differ from traditional tripod turnstiles, which are less accommodating to luggage or wide objects, and from full-height turnstiles, which are more secure but less user-friendly.

Q: What are the Key Components of a Flap Barrier Turnstile?

A: Flaps: The moving barriers that control entry.
Motor and Control System: Operates the flap movement and integrates with the access control system.
