Tripod Turnstile
This is a half-height turnstile with three revolving arms that rotate vertically to allow one person to pass at a time. Speed gate turnstiles are an integral part of modern access control systems, combining advanced technology with robust design to ensure secure and efficient entry and exit. Here’s an expanded step-by-step breakdown of how these sophisticated systems operate:
Authentication
● Credential Presentation: Users initiate the process by presenting a credential at the reader. This credential can be an ID card with an embedded RFID chip, a biometric identifier like a fingerprint or facial recognition, or a digital code such as a QR code displayed on a smartphone.
● Multi-Modal Readers: Many speed gate turnstiles are equipped with multi-modal readers capable of handling different types of credentials, ensuring flexibility and future-proofing the system.
Access Decision
● Valid Credential: If the presented credential is valid, the system sends a signal to the turnstile mechanism to open the barriers. This can involve sliding, swinging, or retracting glass or metal barriers, depending on the model of the speed gate turnstile.
● Invalid Credential: If the credential is not recognized or is invalid, the system denies access. This usually triggers an alert, which can be visual (e.g., red light indicator) and/or auditory (e.g., a buzzer sound), notifying both the user and security personnel of the unauthorized access attempt.
Passage Monitoring
● Sensor Arrays: Speed gate turnstiles are equipped with a series of sensors—optical, infrared, or laser—that continuously monitor the passage area. These sensors detect the presence, movement, and direction of individuals.
● Anti-Tailgating: To prevent tailgating (where one person attempts to follow another through the gate without proper authorization), the sensors ensure that only one person passes per valid credential. If an attempt is made to tailgate, the system can trigger an alert and prevent the barriers from closing until the area is clear.
Closing
● Automatic Closure: After the authorized individual has passed through, the sensors detect the clearance, and the barriers close automatically. This is done quickly and securely to prepare the turnstile for the next user.
● Smooth Operation: The barriers are designed to operate smoothly and quietly, minimizing wear and tear and providing a seamless user experience.
The panels or other mechanical barriers or obstructions are mounted on either side of a channel or lane through which persons have to pass and are mechanically moved, typically pivoting about a vertical axis, to allow persons to pass through a channel from one area to another. It thus performs the function of a turnstile. Often this is facilitated by the presentation of a credential or token such as a smart card, fingerprint, or similar which must be presented to a suitable reader and which, once the user’s credentials have been authorized, either causes the/or each panel to open or releases a break /lock which enables the user to pass through. The electric turnstile may allow movement in either direction (ie for entry or exit (egress)) and passage in both or just one of the directions may require a credential or token authorized entry. Sometimes the operation in either direction may be triggered by a mechanical switch or other means.
Sometimes there is no need for the use of a credential on exit. instead, a sensor or sensors detect the presence of a person wishing to exist and the barrier opens automatically and subsequently recloses. Sometimes free exit is provided utilizing a directional brake which enables a user to pass through in the exit direction but not to pass through in the entry direction unless authorised.
In a situation where authorization is normally required for the exit there is sometimes a requirement that in an emergency egress situation, it must be possible to push the panel away (ie in the direction allowing movement In the exit direction, in order to escape an area quickly. It is possible also to employ directional brakes, clutches, and so on. It is also possible to provide a ‘crash bar’ (crash) type switch (such as the “push for exit” bars seen on emergency exit doors) such that an exiting person could operate it to facilitate exit without the use of a token in an emergency.
The infrared transmitters are fixed on one side of the passageway and the sensors on the other. These infrared transmitters transmit beams which are sensed by the sensors such that a breaking of the beams indicates that something or someone is passing through. They may also be used to stop tailgating and only allow one person at a time through. The apparatus may also be provided with respective card readers which may read an authorization card such as a smart card by the user, and determine whether the user is entitled to enter or exit. Instead of a card reader other suitable authorization means may be provided, either additionally or alternatively, such as retina sensors, fingerprint sensors, or other types of authorization means.
The difference between a turnstile and a Speed Gate Turnstiles

Anti-Tailgating Feature in Pedestrian Access Control Systems
Tailgating is a feature by which a person having access enters a facility and an unauthorised person follows them. Thus, it compromises the security of the establishment as the person who should not enter the facility gains access indirectly. Therefore, pedestrian turnstile systems must have an anti-tailgating function.
There are a couple of ways the anti-tailgating sensor can work. In an integrated security system, the sensors present in the system track and keep a count of the number of people entering a facility.
Panic Bar Drop Functionality
Consider a situation, where a building suddenly catches fire. The turnstiles can’t operate in such an environment. Thus, it will be better to drop down the panic bar and let the pedestrians flow through. Such a pedestrian turnstile is capable of helping with evacuation measures at times of emergencies.
One of the easiest ways to incorporate a drop-arm function is to add a fire alarm integration system. Thus, when there is a trigger in the fire alarm the panic bars drop automatically due to a power cut to the system.
Customisable Safety Access System
Apart from granting access, the Speed Gate Turnstiles turnstiles also need to have a feature to check the identity of entrants. This is possible due to the presence of ports which can integrate themselves with the identity and verification systems. However, depending on the brand that you use there may be other areas where the power backup is present. Thus, it is useful to use a pedestrian turnstile gate that has an inbuilt or power backup facility for use.
How to Maintain to Speed Gate Turnstiles
The chassis maintenance
Swing gate turnstiles’ and speed turnstiles’ chassis are made of an electrolytic board (A3 board) or SU304 stainless steel, which are sprayed or painted on them. After a while, the stainless steel chassis will develop surface rust patches. Sand them with talcum powder, green gauze, and sandpaper to avoid altering their appearance. Then, polish the mirror’s surface with a polishing wheel and polishing wax to make it look shiny. If necessary, apply anti-rust paint to the surface. Dust should be removed from the painted or sprayed chassis with a soft cloth. Use the same color paint to cover any scratches on the surface. Keep in mind not to paint where you will be fixing photocells.
The movement maintenance
Turn off the power, remove the lid, and sweep the dust from the surface. Spray butter on the transmission component, take the swing gate motor out, rub the butter into the gear and wheel grooves, and then replace the motor in its original location. If the connecting piece’s bolts are loose, look over them and tighten them. Limit switches and limit metal sheets should never be adjusted carelessly. Their gap should be 1-2mm. If it is too far away, it won’t be sensed, and if it is too close, it will be easily harmed.
Circuit maintenance
Disconnect the power source, clean off the surface, install the plug-ins, and tighten them if necessary; do not arbitrarily relocate the wiring. Immediately cover the external power supply if it is exposed, and quickly fix it if there is a leak. To determine whether the technical parameters of the interfaces at either end are normal, consult the manual, and repair worn-out electrical components as soon as possible.
