How to increase customers' positive impression of the brand through turnstiles?

Dec 29, 2025

一, Design Optimisation: Changing from physical space to mechanical structure in a way that works for you
1. Designing the width and height of the channel
The channel width of a traditional turnstile is usually between 550 and 600 mm, which is only wide enough for one person to pass through. The channel width needs to be increased to 800–900 mm for baby strollers that are about 650–750 mm wide. The broad channel turnstile on Shenzhen Metro Line 14, for instance, has a channel width of 850mm, which is wide enough for typical baby strollers and one person to pass through at the same time. The bottom of the gate wing should be at least 150mm above the ground so that it doesn't hit the storage basket at the bottom of the pram.
2. New ideas on how door wings are made
Because of how they are built, traditional three-roll brakes or scissor doors might become stuck on the wheels of infant strollers. The full-height turnstile can greatly increase compatibility by optimising the design of the gate wing:

The edges of the flexible door wings are encased in a 5mm thick silicone buffer layer. This layer automatically retracts when it hits something to lessen the impact on the pram.
Adjustable angle door wing: The door wing may now rotate from 90° to 120°, making the path larger and less likely to become stuck.
Door wings that don't block access: Some high-end turnstiles, like those made by Shenzhen Jieshun Technology, have door wings that can be taken off by hand in an emergency, letting strollers through without any barriers.
3. A design that slopes and doesn't slip
The entrance to the channel should have an anti-slip slope that is ≤ 1:12. The surface should be constructed of embossed steel plate or rubber with a friction coefficient of > 0.6. For instance, the entrance slope of the gate at Guangzhou South Station is 1.2m long and 1:15 steep, which makes it easy for a pram to use. At the same time, the ground inside the tunnel should be level so that the pram doesn't tip over because of variances in height.

二, Technological Upgrade: Working together to make intelligent perception and dynamic control better
1. Combining data from multiple sensors
Traditional turnstiles just use infrared sensors to tell if someone is passing through, which might easily mistake strollers for "trailing" behaviour. The latest generation gate has the following sensors built in:

Millimetre wave radar: finds out how big things are in the channel (accuracy 2cm) and automatically extends the door wing opening time from 3 seconds to 8 seconds after it finds the pram;
Pressure sensor: A pressure sensing pad is placed on the ground of the channel to measure the weight of the pram (typically between 8 and 15 kg) and turn on the 'wide channel mode'.
Visual recognition: A camera can see the form of a pram and use AI algorithms to figure out which way to move. This way, the door wings won't close by mistake.
2. Optimising dynamic control logic
The control board has to be updated to an intelligent system that can make decisions based on more than one condition:

Priority control: When a pram is spotted, the gate automatically stops the door wing movement of other channels to keep them from crashing into each other;
Delayed closure: Keep the door wings fully open for 5 to 8 seconds (traditionally 3 seconds) after they are opened to make sure that the pram may pass through entirely.
Fault safety mode: If the sensor breaks, the gate will automatically go to the "normally open" condition and show "manual push rod passage" on the LED panel.
3. Monitoring and intervening from afar
Real-time monitoring functions need to be built into the management platform:

Video review: When the gate alarm goes off, managers may use the mobile app to see the video on the channel and figure out if it is a pram going through;
Opening the gate from a distance: Management can quickly open all gate wings with one click in case of an emergency to keep the pram from getting stuck;
Data statistics: The system keeps track of how many times baby strollers travel by, how often they get stuck, and how long it takes to process them. This information can be used to improve the design.
三, Strategy for management: Planned building from on-site help to emergency plans
1. Help with finding and identifying things on site
Identifying a special channel: Put up a sign next to the gate that says "priority channel for baby strollers" using symbols that are known around the world (like a baby stroller icon and an arrow).
Voice prompt: The gate has a built-in voice module that plays the message "Please use wide channel" when it sees a pram.
workers guidance: During busy times, have workers at the gate help those with strollers find the right channel.
2. Making an emergency plan
Quick reaction mechanism: If the pram gets stuck, workers must go there within 30 seconds and fix the problem by manually unlocking or changing the angle of the door wing;
Backup channel: Next to the gate group, make sure there is at least one accessible channel (width ≥ 1.2m) with manual push rods so that special equipment like strollers and wheelchairs can get through.
How to handle complaints: Keep a log of pram jams, contact users within 24 hours and finish inspecting and optimising the equipment within 48 hours.
3. Testing and maintenance on a regular basis
Check the mechanics: Check the door wing buffer layer, pressure sensor and slope anti-skid function once a month and repair any parts that are worn out;
Update the software: every three months, improve the algorithm on the control board and the pram recognition model;
Stress testing: Every six months, set up fake pram traffic to check how fast and accurately the gate responds.
四,Educating users: moving from usage standards to safety awareness in both directions
1. Use the same kind of promotion
Guide with pictures: Put a graphic showing the processes for getting a pram through the gate next to the gate. For example, "Push the pram to the sensing area, wait for the door wings to fully open, and slowly pass."
Video guide: Play the demonstration video of the pram going through the site's official account or LED screen. The film should be no more than one minute.
Live demonstration: When the new space is ready, have staff act out the passage of baby strollers and show users how to utilise it correctly.
2. Teaching people about safety
Warning: Put up signs close to the gate that say things like "Don't push the cart too hard" and "Keep the speed slow."
For families with strollers, please lift the child through the gate so that other children don't have to walk by themselves.
Emergency contact: Make sure that users can easily find the contact information for management staff next to the gate group.
五, Industry Practice: Look at advanced cases from home and abroad
1. The Tokyo Metro Station in Japan
The main channel of the "dual channel turnstile" at Tokyo Shinjuku Station is 900 mm wide. It has millimetre wave radar and pressure sensors. When strollers go through, the door wings close on their own after a little wait. At the same time, there is a 1:15 slope at the entrance to the tunnel, and rubber mats are put down on the ground to keep strollers from becoming stuck. This cuts down on the number of times strollers become stuck to fewer than once a month.

2. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore
The turnstile in the hotel lobby has a visual recognition technology that can tell the difference between strollers and conventional baggage. The gate automatically goes into "low-speed mode" when it sees a pram. This slows down the door wings' rotation speed by 50% to make sure everyone can get through safely.

3. Shenzhen Metro Line 14 in China
The door wings are made of flexible polycarbonate, and the turnstile channel on this line is 850mm wide. The bottom is 180 mm off the ground. After the system's AI algorithms recognise the baby carriage, the LED screen shows a "baby carriage priority" message and the door wing opening time is extended to 10 seconds.
